Who disconnects a gas stove in Albuquerque?

Hire a licensed plumber, HVAC technician or contractor. New Mexico Gas Company's customer notice says only a qualified technician should inspect gas appliances and replace their connectors (NMGC, May 2021). An old stove that needs to go comes down to who does that step, and when.
Why this is one job to hand off
The notice covers flexible gas connectors, which are common behind ranges. It says some made between 1970 and 1980 can fail, and that even slight movement of the appliance may set off a failure. That makes pulling an old range out from the wall the risky moment. After disconnection, the connector should be removed and the fuel line plugged and capped.
The notice dates from 2021. If you want current guidance, NMGC's number is 1-888-664-2726.
Who does what
| Step | Who |
|---|---|
| Close the valve, disconnect, cap the line | Licensed plumber, HVAC technician or contractor |
| Install the new range and test it | Your installer or plumber. Ask whether delivery includes this |
| Empty the oven and drawer | You |
| Carry the old range out and haul it away | A hauler, or the retailer if they offer it |
Ask these before delivery day
- Does your delivery crew disconnect gas, or only electric?
- Will they take the old range, and is there a charge?
- If the connector is old, will they replace it or refuse the install?
- Is the shutoff valve reachable? If not, who fixes it?
Delivery crews and retailers set their own rules, and they can refuse an install if a valve or connector looks bad. Get answers in writing if you can.
If you are selling or remodeling
Have a plumber cap the line, then leave a note on the valve. An empty kitchen with an uncapped line is a bad surprise for the next contractor.
Getting the kitchen ready
- Take out the racks you want to keep, and empty the drawer
- Clear the counters on either side
- Move rugs and chairs out of the way
- Plan to clean the floor where the range stood
Your free options, if the range is capped and out
